A Brief History

The Peoples' Workshop, originally incorporated in the state of Texas in 1979, was founded and directed by Howard C. Harris, Jr., Professor of Music at Texas Southern University, Houston, Texas USA. Activity and shows led to an annual awards show at the Wortham Center in Houston. After a period of dormancy of The Peoples’ Workshop, the activity is now brought back by The People's Family Workshop aka The Peoples' Workshop.

Some past participants: Beyoncé, Yolanda Adams, Kirk Whalum, Dvonne Parker, John Norman, Robert Glasper, Bryan-Michael Cox and many other world artists participated during their formative career years. Other notable participants include Ben Vereen and Mrs. Sammy Davis, Jr.

Some staff and board members were: Judy Foston, Public Relations and Project Director; Billie Smith, founding member of The Peoples' Workshop; George W. Strake, Jr., Strake Foundation; Walter Davis, CPA; Carolyn Beverly, San Antonio Director; Reverend William A. Lawson, Attorney Raymond Fisher, Representative Shelia Jackson-Lee, Wash Allen, Arnett Cobb, Conrad Johnson, Horace Alexander Young, William "Billy" Reese, Dr. John Biggers, Rathna Kumar, Ernestine Renteria, Mathew Knowles and former Houston Police Chief and Mayor, Lee P. Brown.
